The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
