The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
