The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed how he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal series showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest development escalates the continuing conflict between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen stated through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
âI'm accomplishing what they couldn't,â the founder stated from a cooking set. âI'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.â
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that originally created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
