The Gunners' Debated Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has officially announced that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June of next year.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, reportedly valued at around ÂŁ10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since come under fire.

Such scrutiny is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 rebel group in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.

In February, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by declining to meet with Foreign Minister ThérÚse Kayikwamba Wagner to talk about the deal.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as a branch of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal entered into and upheld this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

Nevertheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the primary aims of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and creating a lasting foundation for travel industry expansion,” read an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's goal of becoming an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while executing grassroots football initiatives that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches enhance their abilities and encourage more involvement in sports throughout the nation.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, portrayed the arrangement as a “significant journey” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's ambitions.

Yet this view was contested by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against Paris Saint-Germain in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and provided wristbands to conceal the partnership emblem on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

In the same month, Paris Saint-Germain extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Meanwhile, the Madrid-based team inked a recent contract for the equivalent timeframe that has resulted in the branding featured on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
