Combatants chuckle as they ride on the rear of a utility vehicle, hurrying past a line of nine dead bodies and driving facing the descending African evening sky.

"Look at all this accomplishment. Look at this instance of ethnic cleansing," a fighter cheers.

He smiles as he directs the camera on his person and his associate militiamen, their Rapid Support Forces insignia on display: "These people will all be killed in this manner."

These individuals are rejoicing over a massacre that relief organizations fear claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people in the Sudanese urban center of the Darfur city last month.

An Urban Center Severed from the Globe

Having held the city under encirclement for approximately 24 months, from late summer the RSF moved to strengthen its control and restrict the remaining residents.

Space-based imagery show that fighters commenced to erect a enormous earth barrier - a elevated earthen wall - encircling the boundaries of el-Fasher, blocking roads and halting humanitarian assistance.
