Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He fought the legal system and justice triumphed.
Two months following getting a 27-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.
Anticipated Imprisonment
The adjudicated instigator – who's been under house arrest in his estate while a number of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the coming days, during mounting talk that he will be moved to a well-known high-security facility.
Previous Statements on Convicts
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing former paratrooper exhibited little sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we offer these dirtbags a easy time?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to wind up there, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Jail Location Speculation
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week visited the complex in an apparent bid to prevent the high court from banishing him there.
Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, stated he anticipated the 70-year-old leader to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the outcome of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 election race – signified it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is extremely serious. He cannot to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing 40 prisoners: “That’s almost one meter squared per detainee.
“We spoke to the inmates and they complain, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
The senator isn't the only voice expressing views before the former president’s expected imprisonment.
Penning in a major publication, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its record”.
“It represents an injustice that erodes the souls of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed General Opinion
This could be correct due to the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his anticipated jailing has also pleased the hearts of numerous individuals who believe he ought to be imprisoned for plotting to block his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him killed.
Congressman Otoni, a politician for the sitting president's Workers’ party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to receive proper care – but proper care while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have long applauding the tough treatment of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has always claimed that basic rights were not for criminals – opted to visit a penitentiary to find out what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.
“He is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning conduct”.
Potential Incarceration Environment
In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected destination appears to be a close penitentiary for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates called Papudinha (Little Papuda).
The accommodations are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although still a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the impressive presidential palace, approximately a short distance away.
Based on reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – approximately the size of two parking spaces – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a set and additionally a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report stated.
Political Reactions
He condemned the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his future in the {
