Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
