Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined initialism emerged several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to care for a minor who has lost their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are continuing. Officials has denied these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
