No less than 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. More than 80 people were arrested.

Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Red Command reacted using shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces reported more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, along with multiple guns.

Many of the individuals are considered affiliates of a group from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
